At the Cosmetic and Dental Implant Center, we strive to provide a calming, caring environment and a comfortable patient experience. Our dentists understand that some patients have dental anxiety and do everything they can to maximize your comfort.
Why Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?
The Cosmetic and Dental Implant Center's specialists do all they can to preserve teeth and avoid the need for tooth extraction or oral surgery. If you are experiencing problems, we evaluate the health of your teeth.
In many cases, we find that extraction is not necessary, and we can save the tooth with other procedures. Even wisdom teeth can be left alone if their growth causes no damage to the surrounding area.
However, sometimes a tooth is so badly decayed or infected that we can't save it, and removing it is the healthiest and safest option. Other reasons our dentists would recommend tooth extraction are:
- Relieve overcrowding
- Prepare for orthodontic treatment
- Prepare for dentures or dental implants
- Remove problematic or impacted wisdom teeth
Regardless of the issue, we always prioritize the least traumatic and invasive method of treatment. It is our top priority to restore and treat your natural teeth and only resort to extraction when all other options are exhausted.
What's Involved with Tooth Extraction
In most cases, removing a tooth is a straightforward procedure. First, we administer a local anesthetic to numb the tooth. Next, our experienced dentists remove the tooth and send you home with post-op care instructions to minimize the risk of any complications.
Occasionally, a tooth may be positioned in such a way that makes simple extraction impossible. In this case, we would recommend a surgical extraction. We understand that the idea of oral surgery is daunting for anyone, but you can be confident our highest priority is ensuring you are comfortable.
We are pleased to offer sedation dentistry, including oral and IV sedation, for your comfort.
Overall, we have created an extremely comforting and welcoming experience because we hope to form long-lasting relationships with each of our patients.
Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?
Basically, our wisdom teeth are vestigial organs and no longer serve any purpose. Our ancestors consumed raw food that was tougher and harder to chew, and we developed larger jaws and a third molar to accommodate the extra effort.
With the advent of processed foods, we needed less chewing power, and over time our jaws shrunk. However, the number of teeth remained the same, so wisdom teeth (third molars) simply do not have enough space in our mouths.
Why Should You Consider Wisdom Teeth Removal?
The growth of wisdom teeth can generate a lot of discomfort. Because of the lack of space, they push out against other teeth and damage surrounding tissue. They also emerge in strange positions and odd angles and crowd existing teeth. Also, their position far back in the mouth makes it challenging to brush and floss around wisdom teeth, increasing your risk of developing cavities and gum disease.
Expert Wisdom Tooth Extractions
In some cases, wisdom teeth don't emerge fully and can get stuck or impacted in the gums. Removing impacted wisdom teeth is a surgical procedure that requires the expertise of specially-trained dentists like those at CDIC.
If multiple teeth are targeted, we recommend IV sedation, so you are completely relaxed, won't feel any pain, and may not have much memory of what happened during the procedure. If oral surgery is required, we close the wound with sutures that may either dissolve over time or need to be removed separately.
Post-Extraction Care Instructions
Before you leave our office, an experienced team member will advise you of the proper steps to take for an uneventful recovery. One of the most crucial aspects of your recovery is to follow instructions carefully to avoid dry socket.
Dry socket is a painful complication that occurs when the healing clot that is forming over the extraction site becomes dislodged. Most importantly, avoid smoking cigarettes, drinking through a straw, or spitting vigorously during the first 24–48 hours.
